I am interested in adding a Pyr to the family and have some questions. I have talked to breeders and it seems that I am getting different answers from each one.

Are they aggressive towards the same sex? I am interested in getting a male, but there are 2 neutered male Jack Russell terriers living next door. Could this be a problem?

Do they like Obedience type work? I have heard that they don't and that they aren't food or toy motivated....

I have 2 spayed females (Husky and Bernese Mtn dog) would a male be the best choice to add to the family?

Do they like to be the Alpha dog?

I love their calm nature, just the right size for me and the gentleness that they have. I know they were also bred for guarding. I don't want a dog that is going to be aggressive towards the neighbors dogs.

Maybe this isn't the right breed for me at this time, which is why I am asking this group. I would like to know the experience you have had and your thoughts.

Thanks for your input:)

I have owned two Great Pyrs. They are wonderful dogs. The first one we had we got from a farm and he was wonderful. He loved to get in his " kiddie" pool out back and he loved to play with our other dogs, 2 that lived at the same house ( both males, 1 border collie mix and a basset hound) and 1 that came to visit every weekend( a male golden retriever). He was raised around them since 14 weeks old.
We got another Pyr. male. He was very good with our two dogs too, but he was very protective. If any animal or person would walk past our fence he would bark and growl at them until they left. He did get a little aggressive toward our dogs( when he was trying to protect our yard from a animal or person) but after he was corrected about being aggressive he didn't do it again. When we took him out anywhere, he was wanting to play with other dogs. He also didn't like the water (pool), when we put him in it he would immediately jump out again. When we were taking our Border Collie mix to training classes there was a Pyr. in the class. It did wonderful. They are very treat, toy, and people motivated. In fact you definitely need to take a Pyr. to obedience classes. They do like to guard their territory which is all of the pets you have, your home, and even you. They do like to be alpha dog because of this trait of the breed. If you get this breed, it doesn't take long for you to get attached to a Great Pyr.

I have Newfs, and have had several Pyr's at my house over the years and I can tell you they are NOT like Newfs. They can be aggressive and dominant. They were bred for guarding and display that temperment. Not that they cannot make good pets if you know what you are getting into. They need strong owners that will not let them get away with things. Neutering the boy as soon as it can be done is a good idea. Obedience classes a GREAT idea!!!!!!!!

Umm..Pyrs have an aloof, calm nature, but are very protective, strong as a dump truck, and are absolutely fearless. Once the dog defines your place as "his", he can (and quite possibly might) kill one of your neighbor's dogs, just for trespassing.
