Glass--if unleaded, will not affect food, and you can see what's going on.

Metal--if stainless steel, good for making piecrust, cookies, and whipped cream, all of which require the bowl to be put in the freezer for an hour first.

Why not have both?

Get them at second hand stores and avoid adding more packaging to the landfills.

You should have both. If you're only going to have one, go with glass but I do love my stainless steel bowls and have several sizes, I use them for mixing all types of salads. I use my glass pretty much for all my baking.

Metal is definitely more durable, and multipurpose.
Just avoid any containing aluminum.

I still have and use my mother's set of stainess steel mixing bowls. They are sturdy, lightweight, and easy to care for.

It depends on what you are making. For breads I like metal .
For cakes: I use food processor - it helps to improve the texture
For cookies: Glass is fine.

Definetely stainless steel. Doesn't break, light weight, usually cheap. They stack nicely so you can get a pile of them and they don't take up much room.
