Hello! we think our dog may be diabetic. She has been eating and drinking a whole lot, and as a result, going to the bathroom a lot. I am a diabetic, and I had the same symptoms when I was diagnosed. iws tinking about testing her blood sugar on my glucose meter, but I don't know how to get a blood sample. Any ideas?

I would call your vet, since even if you could figure out how to get the sample, you would not know if it's high for your breed or not. I'm sure you can do the test yourself, but knowing when to bring the pet in is key.

This is something you will probably want to have a vet do for you. The symtoms sound right, but this could also be a UTI or a bladder infection, or some other things. To be accurate, have the vet do the blood test and a blood glucose, because if your dog is diabetic, the only way to treat that in dogs is with insulin injections.
Is your dog overweight? Many breeds need to be overweight to get this disease.
One of the things you could look at with the pee is if it is very thick and sticky and smells very strong. That is usually a good indication of diabetes.
My first minpin was diabetic. We didn't know what it was for a few weeks, but the first blood test confirmed it.

You need to have the vet do the initial diagnosis via a blood panel sent to a lab. The symptoms you describe do sound like diabetes but they can be due to other conditions in dogs.
Schnauzers, for example, can develop pancreatitis, which has those symptoms.

If the dog is diabetic, it's best to use a separate blood glucose meter for the dog, not also test the dog with your meter...there is a difference in the coding.

Where I work we usually get a blood sample from a dog's gum. occasionally from the inner surface of its ear. Most dogs are not crazy about the idea, as you can imagine.

Animals are tested the same way people are.
One touch ultra is a good meter though any
meter yor using will do. test in the morning
before the dog eats anything. 70-150mg/dl is
normal for dogs.

Take the sample from the base of the dogs tail:

I would imagine it's the same way you test a humans. BUT, you don't know if the healthy blood sugar region for humans is the same for dogs. Call your doctor. She could have some other serious health problems.

You need to see a vet. The normals for dogs are not the same as humans, and you need a vet to make a diagnosis and treat the dog.
There are other conditions that can cause the same signs, so get the dog to the vet ASAP!!!

my dog is a diabetic and the vet told me to prick the inside of her lip or her ear. However, I don't do it because she is deaf and blind and would not understand what mom is doing So, I take her to the Dr. periodically for a glucose curve. It would be best to take your dog to the vet and have her tested.
