If you are finiancing the car whether you are buying from dealer or private party , you must have drivers license and full coverage insurance .... This is a mandatory must have to a / your lender......

If your paying cash ... Then all you need is drivers license and any kind of auto insurance .... regardless if your buying from a dealer or private party .....

If you buy from private party = You must go to the dmv to register this car under you .... Just make sure you keep the paper work ( that you and the seller did the day you bought it)in the car in case you get pulled over ..... That is your temporary registration until you get it updated from DMV.....

If you buy from dealer ... They handle all DMV / title transfers / paperwork for you ..... ( if they don't then don't buy it from em= go somewhere else = never heard of a dealer not doing all the DMV paperwork before) .......... But before you drive off ... make sure they put your temporary registration on the right bottom inside spot of the windsheild ....

In both cases ... the DMV lags in updating anything ... So until you get your new registration - keep some documentation of purchase .... Police are usually pretty easy going to recent new / used car purchases they pull over.....

Also , even if your not financing... you should update your insurance company ASAP..... But as long as california auto insurance policy... You can drive any automobile in california

Just remember ... Financing a car = full coverage a must!!!

Good luck......

If buying from private party ... It's also wise to make sure it's current registration is good ... If the tags are old , then it probably has a lot of DMV back fees or has trouble passing smog to re-new it.....

Once you have bought it, and have all the paper work in place, you can drive it home assuming you have your insurance in place. The best way to do that it tell your agent you are thinking of buying another vehicle so the prep work can be done. As soon as you have decoded on which one, give him the information he needs and get it on the insurance. If you are buying from a dealer he can fax the card over to you.

A dealer can give you a temporary tag and registration. Buying from a private seller, you will need to go to DMV to get the registration and tags before you can legally drive it.

As long as you transfer title and have existing insurance you are covered and have no problem. If your transfered ownership in fact you have to prove that you have insurance, in most states you have ten days with which to register the exact car.
