I want a pistol for plinking in my yard, something really weak and preferably quiet!
As a backstop I'm using large boxes filled with blankets, but I don't want a chance of penetration, any ideas? Thanks!

The weakest production handgun cartridge is the .25 acp. However the ammo is expensive and it isn't really quiet. I am excluding the .22 Short since .22s are NOT exclusively handgun cartridges.

For plinking you can't beat a .22. Fill your large boxes with sand rather than blankets and use .22 Shorts. Again, they won't be quiet. You could try building a frame say 3 feet by 3 feet and three or four feet deep out of plywood. Staple acoustic ceiling panels to the inside of this frame, set it up to the correct height and shoot through it to damp the sound.

Good luck.

Like others have said, if you live in city limits, the discharge of firearms is usually illegal.

Also depends on how big your back yard is and if others can see you. Nothing like getting a visit from the local PD because your neighbors thought you were shooting something.

I know .22 Short rounds are very quiet. I know the hammer strike is louder than the round. I've shot several of those without hearing protection.

As for backstops. Boxes filled with newspaper and or phone books. If you're really worried about over penetration, take a 4'x8'x1" sheet of oak plywood, cut it in half, and nail it together.

The Aquilla brand Colibri ammo fits into a 22 LR chamber and shoots a 30 grain bullet about 400 feet per second. It is about the same sound level as a cap gun since it does not have any gunpowder in it, only an extra amount of primer. It might ruin the blankets you are planning on shooting at. Get a pellet trap from Gamo designed for the more powerful pellet rifles and you probably will be happy. Check your local ordinances before you try it, as some cities prohibit this type of thing.

My vote goes for either the .22 CB cap or the .22 BB cap. The CB cap is easier to find. In fact, the BB cap may be out of production. Both are so enemic that they are suited only for indoor target shooting. As far as I know, there is nothing weaker than either of these rounds.

.22 short. Or shoot .22lr Aguila super colibri or colibri from a revolver like a Ruger super six. Use a better back stop than just blankets though. Add some plyboard layers and make sure it's legal before proceeding.

Primer-driven (no propellant-meaning "gun powder").22 CB Caps. The noise of the firing pin snapping the rim of these .22 rimfires is louder than the noise the primer makes when it goes off. It's is the closest thing to having a silencer without even having one.

.22 CB caps. Check out ammo websites to find some. If you can't find those, .22 Short is next.

i would say that probablly a 22lr it wont even go through a thin piece of metal and it has no kick to it although depending on what you shoot it could still be kinda loud
