Let me start off by saying that I am a Buddhist, as well as a pacifist, who would never think of harming anyone or anything.
For a few months now, I've been having dreams about shapeshifting- mainly into a wolf but sometimes into a bird. Then the other night, the dream starts off as normal- i'm running from 'something' and then shift into a wolf. I can feel the change, but it doesnt hurt. Then, I'm in the woods, running, like I usually am, but this time, i smell a deer, and run with it for a while. Suddenly, I pounce and rip it's throat open. The scary thing is that the dream seems so real- I can taste the blood and feel it on my face, along w/my heart pounding and the scents and sounds.
Any Ideas?

Perhaps your Buddhist training has raised your openness to the point where you are willing to confront your opposite in order to accept him and his nature. To experience the wolf as yourself rather than a stranger requires great faith in breathing out your "peaceful" ego while you are asleep. I'd say that true wisdom includes incorporating better understanding of all things as part of a whole. It's more pragmatic than airy-fairy, really.
As one bright psychologist once told me when I complained about repeated attacks by predatory individulals, for which I claimed to have played no part: "Well, I think if you were more realistic you'd have to admit that there is a lot about rabbits, and the way that rabbits act, which is very attractive to snakes."
Your dream seems to me to be saying that you are ready to accept the change in viewpoint, especially about your own nature, that real growth requires. A great sign, even if it is scary!

Ok first off i don't think you should have to denouce your faith anytime soon by suddenly "calling on Jesus name" for help. This won't help, you're not being bothered by an evil spirit. And Jeancommunicate, the word shapeshifter is self explanitory it means someone or something that changes form or....hmmm what's that word oh yeah shape!!!! And to side bar off that comment if you want to talk religion go to the religion section don't go around pushing your beleifs on other people and disrespecting their faiths and beleifs. Back to the question.. I also had these dreams when ever i was afraid of something. I would see the person/thing that intimidated me and i had the ability to change into these animals, usually a panther or tiger, to defend myself. Those felt real to me also because it's like the animal instinc actually took over and when i growled or pounced, i felt powerful and victorious. Maybe the deer in your dream represents yourself as a fearful person or represents a weak quality or fear you that you may have, and the wolf version of you attacking the deer is your triumph over this side of you or this fear. Think back maybe there is something about yourself that you wish you could change, or fear you wish you could overcome this dream could be a reflection of that. I hope this helps :)

You've opened your mind to the occult or better yet your dream sounds like a Harry Potter movie scene. Have you been dealing in witchcraft or sorcery or tarot cards, etc? This will continually get worse because it is an evil spirit.
I don't even know what the word "shapeshifting" is but you seem to know it very well and describe it even better.
I'll give you the most powerful name in the world and the name is Jesus Christ. The next time this happens and you awaken in this state, get down by the side of the bed on your knees and ask Jesus to take this nightmare from you. Keep saying the name Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus until you feel peace come over you.
You can shout Buddha all day long, but if you mention the name of Jesus the evil spirits tremble and leave. Get you a King James Bible version (KJV) and start reading it in the Book of John in the New Testament. If you have other spirits bothering you contact a local Deliverance Ministry and they will help you.

Well Miss. I am Native American and the wolf is a powerful symbol, as most of these folks are saying, but I honestly dont think it has anythign to do with the wolf itself.
In your sleep, your subconcious sends you pictures and messages, that only it knows, and things it thinks you should know. Sometimes rather it would like to amuse itself.
You say in your dream your running from "something." What is going on in your present life right now to make you want to run (if there IS something that is, this is all based on what I have read)? Usually nightmare occur when under stress or something is going on that you dont like. Shapeshifting, may symbolize a desire, your desire to be something or someone else. Once again, is something going on to make you feel bad about yourself? Also, the wolf as we know it is a predetory animal. I would ask you if you felt hunted or pressured by something if you were the deer but instead I ask you this: Is there something going on in your life to make you want to rip the problem free and fling it away. "Hunt the issue, and kill it" rather. I leave you to ponder this.
I wish you well,
Blessed be

Hi!
Two things spring to mind reading you account of your dream:
1: If you have not yet seen it, get hold of a copy of the film "Lady Hawk". Just watching that film in the light of your dream could unlock some meaning for you. If not, no loss. It's a good film anyway.
2: The Poem "Karmic Repercussions", which commences:
"The hand that swats the fly
will one day die
beneath the rolled up Sunday Times ...."
it contains lines like:
" .. the one who overlooks the anguished screaming of the child
has a portion in the torture with the person who defiled .."
and
" .. whoever eats the morsel that was once upon the hoof
must be ready to be corporal flesh assailed by claw and tooth ..."
These are offered kohanically, not as interpretation. You, dreamer, are the expert. Happy satori.
Good wishes.

there is a native american story
that inside all of us are two wolves that are fighting to eat.
One that is greedy and selfish, and one that is helpful, and
generous.
as the children who were told this tale would ask,
"Which one wins?"
the elder storyteller would grin and say,
"Which ever one you feed the most..."
This is more about your emotions than about
actual violence...
just as dreams of nakedness or kissing
are more about bearing heart and connecting
in spirit than the physical body...
this "blood thirst" could be about "revenge"
or a cloak for some other "hunger"
but not to fear... you get to choose how it will end...
in reality, you can choose to not chase it down,
you can let it run pass you and "let it go"
have forgiveness, for yourself as well as the others...
and you will make peace with it.
Hugs,
Tamara
