The dance is in a month and at school I would like to get to know him more...I am a talkative person but even this for me is awkard I want to become a friend to him too.

Just don't be aggressive or pushy in any way. Kindness and gentleness is the key. Maybe you can show him positive thinking and help him overcome his shyness. If he says anything negative about himself you can insist in a motherly way that he only thinks positive. You may then be all a shy guy needs.

Wow you asked him to the dance and you cant even talk to him? thats going to be one awkward night.
anyways.. if he is in any sports ask him about that. and find out what he is into. And pretend to like it too. thats what you really have to do. just make sure you two are more.. idk friendly? @ the dance.. if you dont it will be really awkward the next day at school.

Try to talk. Or try to dance. Or try to get a conversation going with him. Try asking about what he likes to do or something like that. A lot of people like talking about themselves :)
