Yes, it sounds like the torque converter is going out. My father used to have a Maxima that did the same exact thing. Your best bet is to purchase a used JDM transmission. it will cost you a lot less than getting yours rebuilt and it will take less time to replace it. Also, the tranny will have less than 40,000 miles on it as well. Check out places like www.cnsmotors.com for more info. I've had good experiences with CNS Motors. If you live in So. California, you can drive to their shop and pick up one or have the tranny delivered to your mechanic. Good luck.

Yes it is time to figure it is better to spend your down payment on this old 12 year old car or buy a new car. When drive fails that means clutches inside the automatic transmission have worn out. If this was a rear wheel drive pick -up there would be plenty of re-manufactured gear boxes for around $750 installed ready to go. Because Nissan gear boxes last over 100,000 miles. My telepathy says your car has 187.000 miles? close? New 4 speed automatic trans installed at a Nissan dealer warranted for one year cost about 4,500 installed. Or more if you need new motor mounts too. My best recommendation is trade that car quick while it still can drive to the dealership.
