...all of our many religions and beliefs, and just get along?

There are wider problems in this world than religion (or lack thereof).

Poverty is perhaps the biggest one. Did you know that there are more Americans living in poverty than in some third world countries?

This is partly due to population differences, but nevertheless it shows that poverty exists in rich countries as well as poor. It's just easier to ignore in a rich country. It's relatively unknown that there are hundreds of thousands of British children who do not have a 'full' school uniform, or even more than one pair of shoes.

I already have the 17th of October booked in my diary. It's the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. I will be taking part in charity events on that day. I recommend you do the same.

So please... set aside your quarrels and recognise that there are people the world over who need our help. Not just in 'darkest Africa'.

Can I have thoughts and comments?

And before anyone raises it, I'm not trying to deflect attention from African countries who suffer much more extreme poverty, I'm raising the fact that when people see that it's miles away, it's very easy to ignore.

The fact is, poverty is in every country, in every town and city, every religion and in every language imaginable.

Understandable, ZAPP. I am struggling with the grief, too.

It seems you have your own personal thumbs-down fairy. Be very aware of this. Normally I'd just add another thumbs-up to counteract it, but this account can't rate yet.

I truly have an altruistic nature aside from the computer upon which I type, but My Booty took the words outa my keyboard with the Purell remark (Thumbs up for that!)

I have this weird problem with complete strangers who like to ...erm....hug people excessively online. Perhaps I will hug this huggy entity back when she DRESSES HER AGE!

I realise there are problems everywhere but one can't wish them away with love and fairy farts alone. As for poverty, the FMSC organisation volunteers people to send packages of food to any starving country that is in need of it. It has a sorta-religious background, but I can wade through the bull to get to the activism, already.

Hands across R&S!

The fact that more Americans live in poverty than in some third world countries also has to do with the different definitions of poverty based on the "average" standard of living.

Anyway, I think some friends of mine are doing some volunteering that day, so I'll join them.
