Joseph Smith Junior (back in the 1800's) prayed to ask which religion was true......... he was visited by god and Jesus and told none of them are true. In time, over the course of a few years, he was visited by an ancient prophet who had lived in America. he was given a book to translate (the book of Mormon) which told the story of how ancient Israelites came to America... the bulk of the book covers the period between 500 bc and 400 ad - in America. It tells how Jesus visited America, after he had finished in Jerusalem.

The main holy books in Mormonism are
the bible (KJV, for preference)
the book of Mormon
The doctrine and covenants
the pearl of great price

the doctrine and covenants is a history of the early (1800's) church, and the prophecies and sayings of Joseph Smith Junior (mostly)

the pearl of great price is a translation, by Joseph smith junior, of an ancient Egyptian papyrus (this is a real papyrus, taken from a 'mummy' exhibit, which was touring the country in Joseph Smith Jr's time - however, the translation is disputed by every Egyptian authority in the world - except the Mormon ones, of course)

to show you the many, many, many faults with Mormonism would take too much space that YA! would allow.

The church was founded in 1830, 10 years after Joseph Smith had received a Vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ. It is said with this vision Joseph Smith knew more about God and Jesus Christ then all religious professors and theologians will ever know.

The Church was formily founded on 6 April 1830, in New York.
It's doctrines are unorthidox and so it brings a lot of hatred towards the church.
