Two books:
The Face of Battle, by John Keegan, copyright 1976, Penguin Books
And
Men in Arms (fifth edition), by Preston, Roland and Wise, copyright 1991, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich College Publishers.
A side note, Mr. Keegan teaches at Sandhurst (the British Military Academy). He is brilliant both as a writer and story teller. Sit in on one of his classes and he's libel to bore you to death. But get him in a pub with a pint and you're guaranteed a rousing good time.
For a frontal assualt, you should consider three lines. First, your pikemen, followed by your swordsmen with your archers bringing up the rear. In the days of old, it took a lifetime to train a good archer. Therefore, you'd tend to keep them in the rear -- where their arrows can still be used effectively and still keeping them somewhat protected.
You should look up the Battle of Agincourt 25 October 1415. Classic, textbook.

The Parthians were archers mounted on horses, who fired arrows at the enemy swordsmen and rode away each time the enemy got close so they beat them.
The strings of bows don't work properly on rainy weather, so a good strategy for swordsmen is to attack them in rain. Or at night when they can't see to aim their arrrows.
In Ancient Roman times, a good strategy was to hide some of your army behind a hill and suddenly charge into the side (flank) of the enemy army when it was busy fighting your troops in front. Julius Caesar did that once.

Watch the move "300" and you'll see all sorts of strategies. The movie is based on a true story and is considered a classic in ancient battles.

Movies aren't always the best to rely on for historical accuracy, but sometimes it helps. However 300 SHOULD NOT be referenced for this purpose. It is a fantasy movie with so much fact removed that it should not be even considered a historical movie. Just like that Pathfinder crap when it comes to the vikings.

Watch Braveheart, That would be the best was to learn strategies of medieval times. First they would use longbows as artillery and soften up the target, then they would use Calvary to run over the infantry. and then they would sent their own infantry in to mop up the rest.
