Well, it looks like someone is giving all the pit bull answers a thumbs down, what ignorance.
Yes, I would say a pit bull, they are beautiful and naturally sculpted. They are very energetic dogs and will need socializing and all that good stuff. Here's some informative sites:

If you want a strong dog to compete in weight pulls and do athletic things with you, an American Pit Bull Terrier is probably your best choice. They also tend to have nice, friendly temperaments, and there are many homeless and in need of rescue.

Any terrier will be a very strong, athletic dog, including English bull terriers and Jack Russells. Even a small terrier packs a lot of power.

English and French bulldogs are NOT strong and athletic, though. This was bred out of them. Now they are gentle and lazy dogs. American bulldogs will have similar strength to the APBT, though, and in fact the two breeds look similar.

ADDENDUM: Don't get a wolf hybrid. These are the only truly dangerous dog, because they are half wild animal. Dogs have been bred for thousands of years for dependability, friendliness, submissiveness to humans, etc. and even they aren't perfectly safe. Throwing wild animal genetics into the mix is a bad idea and results in an unpredictable animal.

You want a Pit Bull. An APBT, Amstaff or Staffie.
I can only speak for the APBT as that is what I have. A 4 year old and a 4 month old. The pup is a bit over 20 lbs so who knows where she is going. The older one is almost 60 lbs. She is solid as a rock. She has a very big head with jaw muscles that bulge out the side of her face. She really looks mean. She is the most lovable, friendly dog in the world. She does not know the meaning of stranger, she loves everyone.
So, if you want an intimidating looking friendly dog, it is the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Yorkie (Yorkshire Terriers). They have that big dog attitude in a small package. They are fiercely loyal, great watchdogs, love to snuggle, DON'T SHED, and are the most intelligent dogs I've ever seen. Over the last 40+ years I've owned numerous different breeds of dogs but my Yorkies have been the easiest, best dogs I've had. I train them first to puppy pads then to potty outside; so I can be late from work, sleep in, etc. with no accidents. They're GREAT!

Adore the Bull Terrier.
They are very sweet and a great companion for kids.

Can't get any prettier than Rufus, the Best of Show at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show a few years back.

I, personally, don't think that any you mentioned are good breeds.

There are many large breeds that don't have the bad reputation. Can't you settle for something less? Go to the pound or rescue places & adopt a dog that needs a home. Unless you have a couple to three thousand dollars to spend on a quality dog. One that has had proper breeding & won't be mean.

Kellythe... has a good point. You have to know a lot about canine behavior in order to teach a strong spirited animal.

Well the best dog, "known in America" would be the Golden Retriever. They're perfect with kids, great with strangers. They are tough enough to protect, but too soft to defend. In other words, they are good watch dogs but bad guard dogs. They are very beautiful, but the grow big. They are also very hyper-active and playful. They act like puppies no matter what age they are.
But hey, most people love them. Me on the other hand, have a Shetland Sheepdog. They're like miniature collies. His name is Trotter and he is so well-behaved and sugary sweet. He is so tolerant with kids, but he could be a bit of a coward. He's a great watchdog though and he loves other animals.
But guess what? The stereo-type Sheltie hate strangers and are too snobby to play with kids.
Wrong! Not my Trotter.
Honestly, I think just like humans, dogs are individuals.

Toy Poodles are the best. This is because they are rated the smartest dogs and they don't shed and the have little dander and the toy breed are smaller than big dogs that jump all over you. Other breeds can not compare.

Well it really depends!

but I think either the German sheperd or the golden retreiver.
because the German Sheperd is intelligent, easy trained and a good guard dog.
And the Golden retriever is ... well a good dog .. I dnt think it has bit anyone yet so thats a good point. And they are also easy to train. They are also good with kids.

That all I know haha Hope I helped!! x

GREAT DANE>

very smart and loyal. Will scare anyone off by their size, but wouldn't harm a fly. Well if they stepped on the fly with their massive paws then maybe. They are BIG couch potatoes. You will love them
