Hi
I just got a baby cockatiel from the pet store. I was told it's less than a year old. Anyway it's the second day I have it, and I noticed that the bird smells funny. I had a budgie before and those didn't smell the day after I got them. Could it be what the cockatiel is eating?(it's cockatiels mixed bird seeds)

The cage is brand new, never been used before either. Also i don't know when the storeowners gave it a bath, but it didn't smell when we purchased it. I can't give it a bath yet cause it's afraid and doesn't trust me yet

Does anyone know what is causing the cockatiel to smell?

I bathe mine about once a week and by the end of the first week it has a very slight smell to it but only noticeable if ur really close to it. I would research bathing birds- mines is three years old now so its used to its baths and its second nature to me so I can't even give you suggestions one this- but u should research it. When I got mine he was around 5 or 6 months, and I began to bathe him about a month after I got him- at first I used to just spray him too- but he didn't smell when I got him though he did (noticeable only if close to his cage) within the month of having him. This might be due to the dust that they spread when the shake them selfs off- after I bathe mine he shakes a lot of it off.

You are the owner of one of the most lovable birds you could own. (Personal experience). So congratulations.
About the smell, it is probably still smelling of the conditions it lived in. The smell will soon disappear. I owned a cockatiel and it smelled of nothing.

well you could have it checked out by a vet.. or you could just wait for it to trust you. play with it alot and dont scare it at all. then give it a bath. i wouldnt recommend spraying it yet, that might scare it. once its comfortable, give it a bath.

another option would be... while playing with it for a little while, set it down on some newspaper or somthing for a little break. have a dish of food and a large big-enough-so- that -it -can -bath water dish. just watch it for a little while and see what it does. it might go and start playing in the water

Well, mire smell ok but what I do is spay them with water frequently so they take baths. Usualy they take baths in theyre own drinking water/ toilet and that causes them to smell that way.

You have to clean the cage every day and I mean every day. If this is not the problem it could be illness, maybe rent a book about cockateils from the library and see what it says.

Ok if it is a baby, maybe it will smell. it depends. If it stil has its quills then yeah it should. But when it get older it won't stink like it does as a baby.
