I've been told by Christians that the purpose of life is to praise God. Is God, an all-powerful being, so insecure that he needs to make intelligent life just so they can praise Him? Isn't that a bit of a boring reason to live?

All opinions welcomed.

It is not ego...He created us and has given us His son. He created this world and given it to us to care for and reap what it sows. He has given us love to share. He has given us a ticket...a free one...to share eternity in paradise with Him....all He asks is for us to show Him the praise and thankfulness that He more than deserves! If you have a child who you provide for, care for, look after and love....wouldn't you ask that your child show appreciation for what you provide for him/her?

I have no idea. Not mine.

The fact that some Christians told you this, doesn't make it true for all Christians. I've actually only heard this explanation once or twice, quite a while ago.

It's my belief, as a Christian (and before all the thumbs down, I know that this isn't normal Christian dogma, but I'm not a normal Christian :)), is that many of the things in the Bible are the thoughts and ideas of the writers themselves, not God. They did the best that they could, and of course, I believe, there is a great deal of wisdom too. But not all of it is from God. So the fact you read it there doesn't mean that it is a true reflection of God's purpose.

If you want to know what God thinks about something, ask her/him/them. If you have no belief in God, why bother, figure it out for yourself.

In the end, does it really matter why human kind was created, or hatched, or just showed up one day accidentally. Would that honestly change the way that you live your life?

The god that is described in the Bible is a petty, tyranical bully with a hugely sensitive ego. A god that tells his most faithful servant that he con't go into "the Promised Land" because he struck a rock instead of tapping it is a control freak in the extreme. A god that wipes out all life on a planet because a tiny section of its biosphere irritates it is a maniac. A god that declares people to be "good" or "evil" depending on whether or not those people worship it (regardless of the quality of their morality or life), is an egomaniac. A god that is offended because someone does some work on a "Sabbath" is a towering snob.

So just what is laudible about this god, again?

I wouldn't call it insecurity. Maybe he just wants to keep Himself amused by seeing what we do.
Think about it this way: when you play the Sims wouldn't it be interesting if there was a mode that gave these Sims free will and intelligence which simulates humans [(the kind the AI programmers could only dream of)] and you (the creator of course) didn't have to keep clicking on them with a mouse and commanding them (at least commanding them in the most direct way like robots.)? They would have enough intelligence to run their lives and communicate with others. Then say, that you programmed a set of rules to live by in the world you created and in those rules there's a one about praising their creator and offering worship. Then you give these rules to any arbitrarily chosen Sim (we'll call this Sim a 'prophet'). Then this Sim spreads out the set of rules to all the other Sims and you get to watch if these Sims live by the guidelines you've just given them.

Wouldn't it be interesting and amusing to play this Version of the Sims just to see what they do? Does that make you (the creator of this little world) insecure? I don't think so. You just want to be amused and entertained.

Nope. That's not how the story goes.

Here's how I've taken the story to be.
Long ago in a land far away. There was God. Being a big and powerful God, he got lonely, so, for the very reason as to why we have children, he created his children. He made a dude, Adam, and a chick, Eve. He gave them everything they could ever hope for. Paradise, animals to play with, lots of cool stuff. As in all homes, there are No-No's that we are never to be messin' around with. This "no-no" was the "Tree of Life" (i think this is what it's called). It was never to be touched, even thought the fruits on it looked so yummy. Then, the fallen angel, Lucifer, transformed himself into a serpent who found Eve one day, looking at the tree. He told her how wonderful the fruits were and that she should try them. These friuts would give her the power God had in just one bite. Eve, having the mind of a 5-yr-old (keep in mind.. Adam and Eve hadn't been living for very long, they were kinda like babies), was amazed at the serpent's words and took the fruit and bit into it, and then shared some with Adam. Lucifer gained power from their temptation, and they disobedience to God, so the world fell into do. God was angry with Adam and Eve, and punished them by leaving them in the sinful, bloody, disease ridden world we live in now. He wanted to make sure that Heaven stayed pure, so he made it only accessable to those who were completely willing to follow the rules and keep them straight. The only way we can prove this is to pray to Him, beg, respect, and promise to follow the order of Christianity they way God had planned them to be in the first place. If you think about it.. it kinda sounds like rules your parents would give you as a child. If you're good, you get icecream, if you're bad, no icecream. :(

I hope this answers your question! :)

God made us because He wanted to share His joy, His perfection, and His happiness. He didn't make us because He needs praise--we praise Him because it's the only thing we can do to thank Him, even a little bit, for making us and giving us this wonderful world to live in.

As a great man once said, "I thank people when they give me birthday presents. Can't I thank someone for the birthday present of birth?"

The question is related with religion & spirituality. There is difference to say any thing and to go on the path written in religious books. I donot think that any religion permits us to praise Almighty to get intelligent life without work is worship .Almighty has given birth to us on this universe and what type of work we do, we will get same type of results. If we are making fool to praise God then Almighty is much wiser than us and in due course we will get same type of the results as we have done the work. To live meaningful life it is necessary to keep in mind about the blessing of Almighty for which we use to do prayer to Him. By which we can carry our life in a proper path but to live meaningless life is useless because such persons life does not believe on Almighty because they are putting dust in the eyes of God to pray Him without work is worship. I thank to the questioner to ask about intelligent life based on false pray to Almighty instead of keeping in mind that"Work is worship".

What it would seem that most Christians forgot to mention is that we are all born with free will, and no opinion of man toward God can change his omnipotence or power.

Some people need to pick up the good book before they call themselves men of god.

You can't bring God down a notch lol.

God bless!

Almost any time a question has the words "God would" in it, it's an invalid question, and yours is no exception. We can't know *why* God makes His decisions unless He chooses to reveal it to us; we simply obey Him.

Also, to *praise* God, in this context, might also mean to *glorify* Him, which we do whenever we help others.

What kind of God wouldn't create people just to praise Him?

I think he was just lonely. Just imagine being the only thing in existence, it would a WAY boring existence with nothing interesting to see. It is perfectly logical that if he had the power to create, he would make logical creatures to make things more interesting,
