Call up the bus company and ask what the procedures and requirements are.

You will probably need a health cerificate from a vet, but you need to be completely sure BEFORE you plan to travel. They can and will deny you boarding if you haven't met their requirements.

As to how, stick the cat in the carrier, and go. "Practice" with the carrier before hand might be a good idea so kitty gets used to the idea.

I'm not so sure they allow that, yes the cat will need food and water, but what about when it's time to do it's business? I'm not sure any others on the bus would appreciate the smell. Like everyone else has suggested call the bus station see what they have to say, who knows they may even have accommodations for such an occasion (I wouldn't hold my breath on that but hey it's always worth a shot, right?).

The best option would be to take the cat with you on the bus, but I highly doubt that would be possible. However, I have a carrier that has water and food bowls attached to it, so you could just get something like that, as long as the drive isn't TOO long. Also, transportation can be very stressful. See your vet for recommendations on how to make it as easy and unstressful as possible.
