is there anything out there that i can use on my dog to get rid of mites or fleas. ?

Yes - veterinary products are available to treat both. They work, which is why they're more expensive than store-bought stuff, which does not work and is often dangerous. You have been warned.

The only way you can see a mite is with a very strong magnifying glass. So it was probably a flea you found.
As a general rule, for each one you see there are 500 more waiting somewhere.
Get some flea & tick shampoo, or a pyrithrin dip or go to a groomer & get the dog dipped there. Vacuume over & over & over again & again to get them out of carpet. Treat the dog, the house & the yard all at the same time & then again in two weeks to catch newly hatched & missed fleas. Then again in another two weeks. This is done according to the breeding cycle of the flea or tick. After three times you should start to see less & less. I always go for the fouth treatment just to make sure I got them all.
This should be done at least once a month to keep them gone.

Yes, Frontline or Advantage is excellent to use. Your vet can advise you. My dog is a husky with a double coat and we only have to use it twice a year, no messy powders or shampoos. Also ask your vet about products to use in the environment such as the dog bedding and yard and carpets etc. I say it was a flea, unless it was a small insect that just happened to be on your dog. They get mites inside their ears, so have the vet check them as well. Cheers!

Talk to your vet about getting the dog on Advantix or Frontline.
BTW - It was probably a flea, not a mite - Mites are so small you can barely see them...
