The Marine Corps is a "special" force that conducts land and riverine warfare, ship boarding, security of naval and diplomatic facilities, amphibious warfare, etc. They are what are erroneously called "elite" troops, trained to handle situations that are more difficult than those that the Army handles, and to prepare the way so that the Army can manage what's left.
The Navy operates ships and aircraft to save lives at sea, to secure the use of the sea for the US and its allies, deniy use of the sea to the enemy, and to support Army and Marine personnel ashore.
You can find extensive information by checking the wikipedia pages for both services.
To clear up certain misconceptions...The Marines are NOT part of the Navy, although both services fall under the Department of the Navy and therefore the Secretary of the Navy. There are also several other organizations that are part of the Department of the Navy, but not part of the Navy.
Also, the Marines and Navy ARE military, just like the Army and Air Force. However, the respective departments (Navy, Army, and Air Force) also include multiple non-military organizations, like their investigative branches.

The Navy is the maritime force that operates combatant ships.
The Marines is a separate "branch" of the military that still operates under the department of the Navy. Marines are the "tip of the spear", the first in combat, and they rely on our large Naval presence to be able to quickly deploy worldwide.
The Navy doesn't have tanks, but the Marines don't have their own medics (Marine medics are Navy Hospital Corpsmen).
The Navy also operates thousands of aircraft in a variety of missions... the Marines don't have that many and are focused more on combat.

I was in the navy for 15 years.I was stationed on three different ships which means I was around marines all the time. The entire 15 years I never saw an overweight marine, you can bet the navy is full of fat chiefs. The marines stay physically fit throughout their careers, navy personnel do not.

The difference between the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy is like the difference between a SWAT team and regular cops. Actually it's more like asking the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. The U.S. Navy is responsible for world wide strategic defense, providing global reach and a second strike capability. The Marine Corps is an assault force used to overwhelm the enemy with decisive power and unparalleled violence. Think Hammer (Navy) vs. Nail (Marines).

Navy and Marines. See a similarity in the name?
Marine don't need congress for war, they get their orders directly from the president. All other branches have to wait for congress.

Squids, or Navy personnel are charged with the duty of operating, defending U.S. naval vessels and carrying the fight to the enemy in attack aircraft. Marines were originally constituted to be the fighting force aboard naval sailing vessels, while sailors manned the ship. Their mandate has evolved and they have become a mobile assault force capable of taking the fight to the enemy. They have become specialists in seaborne landing assaults.

The marines are not a branch of the military, they are a part of the navy. That is the major difference.
