My husband is coming home soon after doing a 15 month deployment to Iraq. He will be coming home late at nigh anywhere between 12 am - 4 am and I know he will be hungry so I want to make homemade beef stew in a crock pot ( i usually make it out of the can lol)...Does anyone have any good recipes and what type of bread would be good with it EX: cornbread, homemade white bread... etc.

CROCK POT BEEF STEW

2 lbs. stew meat in 1" cubes
1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. beef broth
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic or chopped onion
1 bay leaf
1 tsp. paprika
4 sliced carrots
3 diced potatoes
1 stalk celery, diced

Put meat in crock pot. Mix flour, salt and pepper and add to meat and stir to coat meat. Add remaining ingredients and stir to mix. Cover and cook on Low for 10 to 12 hours or on High for 4 to 6 hours. Stir well before serving.

I would serve it with cornbread or some nice big Grands biscuits!!! Enjoy

I like to buy a roast and cut it up into bite size pieces rinse in water then roll in flour and fry in Canolla oil for a few minutes then place in a crock pot in beef broth with bite size carrots, onions, potatoes and celery and soy sauce, pepper and let cook on low all day long on low.
If you want more flavor then add some salt.

Good luck and I hope both you and your husband has a great time!

Oh you can also add a can of corn too that's really good!

I brown the meat real good then cut it up and toss in an onion and some beef broth, let that go all day.2 hours before eating add the veggies(taters, carrots, maters, okra, pearl onions, whatever I have on hand),I add a little kitchen bouquet and some bayleaf to that pot. Thicken it with a slurry of 3 tablespoons flour and 1/2 cup cold beef broth.Corn meal muffins would be good with this.
Deer meat is real good cooked this way hog meat too
or any kind of beef meat. Got additional company? add in a bag of elbo macaroni, feed an army!

Brown your stew meat. Add it to your crock pot. Add potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables that you like. Add beef broth or stock, salt, pepper and red wine. Let it cook on high for about an hour, turn it down to low for another 8 - 10 hours. The last 1/2 to 1 hour you may want to turn it up to high and add some thickener. Season to taste and enjoy!

Homestyle Beef Stew - Saute bite size chunks of sirloin or round beef, sprinkle with flour, stir and add beef broth, to make a thin gravy. Simmer about 2 hrs., covered. Add cut carrots, onion and potatoes, simmer until all is tender, taste for seasoning, add salt, pepper and dried thyme, 1/2 box frozen peas or green beans. When all is done, serve in bowls with a side salad and a fresh white Ital. or French loaf.

my fave is either corn bread or a crusty italian loaf.

for stew...
i get a bag of baby carrots, thick chop
3-4 stalks of celery, thick chop
1/2 onion, med/thick chop
4-5 med taters
1 can of green beans, or fresh if in season (1/2 lb snapped in pieces)
1-3 lbs of meat. i dice it and season prior to tossing it in (mini marinade)
i use beef stock, and water, fill to top of meats and veggies
1 package of onion/mushroom soup mix

wait a few hours before tasting.
season accordingly

oh you can toss in a can of cream of his fave soup too (and a lil milk) to make it creamier
