Yes there have been people who have been locked up due to child support not being paid. And you know what is funny? With all the forms of protection out there regardless of nothing being 100% proof, you can still protect yourself from having a child so there goes half of the cases in which someone has to pay child support. In other cases, it could be that situation where someone has been through a divorce. The only problem I have with people that don't pay child support is the fact that... some people just don't care about their kids which is why some of these people don't pay their child support, and don't get me wrong, it is not always the 'dad' that is the one that is supposed to pay child support and doesn't. Regardless, if you're a dead beat... you deserve to be put in jail.

My buddy was getting arrested often. He was paying but in Illinois the state oversees the paying of the support from payroll deductions. Whenever the payments were late or incorrect, his ex wife would file a charge against him to have him arrested. After spending so much time in and out of jail, my friend began to keep his check stubs on him. He would still get hauled in but when before a judge he would show his paperwork and the judge would let him go. The ironic thing in all this? My friend was a Federal Police Officer. Eventually he had to leave the force because of all the drama. Sometimes the local police would come to his work to arrest him but were unable to because he was on federal property. Just start keeping your check stubs and other proof with you. The police won't care about your evidence but if you do get taken in, you can get a judge to look at it. Good luck!!

Absolutely! Lots of people go to jail for failure to pay child support. Some people argue that you can't pay support if you are in jail but they don't understand that someone who pays child support does not go to jail. Actually, someone who hasn't been paying can pay support while in jail through the work release program.
There is a difference between being unable to pay and refusing to pay. If you are unable to pay but you cooperate and try to work something out with enforcement then you don't go to jail. If you refuse to pay and try to run & hide, then you go to jail.

Yes, if you're in contempt of the court order and jail time is ordered by the court. Most people usually make arrangements at that point instead of going to jail, but you have a choice -- pay up or go to jail.

It is getting less prevalent. Now, they first suspend your drivers license. OH, and they don't let you know about it. You just get stopped and get arrested for driving with a suspended license. They also garnishee your wages and tax refunds. People on Disability think they are off free but of the only 5 reasons for garnisheeing Disability checks, 4 are for taxes and one is for Child Support.

I've seen many people go to jail for nonsupport.

In Ohio if you are 6 months delinquent you can even be charged with a felony.

Yep, most states have "dead beat parents" laws now. Sadly, it makes little sense, because once locked up, they sure can't pay.
