Word is a Microsoft product. WordPerfect is a Corel product. They are not the same thing. While both programs should be able to read the others' files, the conversion can result in formatting problems. You can try going to the File menu, selecting "Save As...." and choosing a Microsoft Word format before you send it. You could also try downloading OpenOffice, which has better Word compatibility than WordPerfect does.

To let people open documents made in word perfect, you have to save it in a format that Word can read.

File Save As or F 12 will bring up a dialog box
then pick the word version that the other people have.
then save the file as file type
MSWord 97/2000/2002/2003 (options for WP12)

If you have a newer copy of word perfect it may have more recent versions of Word to save to.

When you save the WordPerfect document, also save a copy as a text file. When you send your resume, send both versions.

WordPerfect used to be mainstream software, but Word has such a huge share of the market, you can't expect folks to be able to handle a WP file.

Word Perfect is not a Microsoft product, and it's completely different to MS Word.
Still, you should be able to save files in a format that can be used by both applications.

Don't send your resume as a Wordperfect document. Wordperfect vesions from WP8 up have a publish to PDF function under the "File" tab. Publish your resume to PDF and anyone can open it using any number of PDF readers, which most companies have. Most transmitted documents are in a PDF format.
