Someone I know described himself as a Darwinist, and I wanted to know what this entails. I also read recently that most Pagans are Darwinists. (In a Pagan publication).

Just wanted to know.

Darwin beleived in Creation
Contrary to popular belief Charles Darwin believed in creation by God. He stated that life was "breathed by the creator" (direct quote from the Origin of the Species).

Darwin's theory was more to do with natural selection which he uses to explain the many and varied forms of life that came from the original created life forms. He did not invent the 'theory of evolution' that is simply a modern corruption of his book.
Go to your local library and ask for the book so you can check the quote yourself. look below in the source box for the info you will need.

What is interesting is that Darwin, himself, was a Priest candidate who was taking this voyage on the Beagle just before entering a seminary.

The conflict of interest that marked his life - the scientific versus the religious, marks his legacy and the influence on our understanding of ourselves.

The evidence that pointed to "natural selection" and the "survival of the fittest" was being discovered at a faster and faster rate by the time of Darwin.

He was not the first to have these ideas.

He was the first, though, to thoroughly observe and record information that supported these ideas.

Almost every educated person today consider themselves to be influenced by the ideas put forth by Darwin.

Even the Catholic Church, under John Paul as Pope, conceded that the evidence is overwhelming, and have accepted evolution as fact.

The people most offended by these ideas are Christian fundamentalists, who have never won an argument with science, yet keep praying that they will.

I agree with rose63's answer, and I would also add that people who believe in Darwin's ideas include the majority of people in every first world country except the United States (where religious fanaticism still has a foothold, and its proponents are able to get enough media time to confuse a fair number of people about the nature of reality).

Darwinism is the term applied to people who believe in the Darwinian theory of evolution, as opposed to its alternatives (the Lamarckian theory, etc.)

It's a term that's not commonly used anymore, except by creationists who try to attribute the theory of evolution to a single person, as opposed to the scientific community as a whole.

The term was also used as part of "Social Darwinism" which was essentially a racist movement that twisted evolutionary ideas to proclaim the superiority of certain people.

Darwinism is the name that Christians have given people who believe in evolution. It is a misnomer... meant to belittle people who believe in evolution by making it appear that they worship Darwin.

Christians lie and say Darwin renounced evolution. They lie and say Einstein was a Christian. They lie and say Hitler was Atheist. Don't they know lying is a sin. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
