I don't know about up north as I live in the south, however there are all sorts of rescue groups that have dogs that can be adopted. You do have to fill out an application and pass the screening and home visit before you will be approved to adopt a rescue group dog. What particular breed are you looking for? I would go to the dog breeder site and see if there are any breeders in my area or nearby that would be reasonable. If you go to a pet store you are going to pay an exorbitant amount for a pup, and in likelihood it won't be a good quality of dog. Most pups in pet stores come from a puppy mill and aren't well cared for. Why not go to your local shelter and see what they have also. I have adopted purebred dogs from our animal shelter on several different occasions. Give it a try.

I've never been to Philly....but I'm 100% positive that you can find a dog for less than 2000....what kind of dog are you looking for? You could always go to the humane society. Those dogs are inexpensive and they really need homes!

The question is: Are you searching for a specific breed, or age?
Local rescues are often wonderful places to find great dogs. Despite the stigma that is on occasion attached to rescues, people give up dogs to rescues more often than not due to the lack of time they can offer for the animal, or if they are moving and are unable to retain the animal.
Costs for rescue animals vary greatly, but are often anywhere from $50 - $500. Check out http://petfinder.com/
If you are searching for a puppy, stop looking locally. A quick search of breeders nationwide would be good. Puppies are VERY often transported by air, and you can easily get a puppy of the breed of your choice for under $1000 with transit costs.

Try the SPCA or Humane society. Where I live, they retrain the dogs and ensure that they are properly domesticated before they sell them. They do have some dogs that are more aggressive, but the Human society will provide you with classes to build a relationship with you and your newly adopted dog.
Don't support pet stores...there are so many abandoned dogs that will be put down if they are not adopted. Obviously you won't find a purebred, for that, you'll need to find a breeder... you could try craiglist...sometimes that have cheaper dogs.

Yes! Please, please call your local animal shelter. There are puppies, and just-out-of-puppyhood adults waiting for a loving home. They make some of the best pets and are insanely loyal!
If you're immidiate local shelter doesn't have anything, go to www.petfinder.com and use the advanced search option to set the results to areas near you. Dogs and puppies in need of adoption each have a profile, some of which contain tons of info about them. You can find several dogs who look like what your looking for, and then call or email their shelter owners. Best of all, you get a loving companion often for under 300! They are often free!
You will probably be saving a dog from euthanasia, so its a wonderful thing to do.

You can go to your local animal shelter rather than a breeder. There are a lot of healthy dogs at the shelter, and the fee is very minimal ($20-30) with licensing. Most vets will also give discounts on vaccinations and procedures if your animal was adopted at the shelter.

Have you looked in the newspaper under classified ads? I got a Weimaraner puppy for $450 they have lots of breeds for way less than $2000. What type of dog are you looking for that costs that much??? Never buy from a petstore, they contribute to puppy mills, the dogs are harder to crate train to housebreak and they are extremely expensive.
Plus they are under $100 at your local Humane Society

have you tried going to an animal shelter to find a dog? You normally only have to pay an adoption fee and thats pretty cheap most of the time. Trying going to a few animal shelters and rescue organizations. You'd be amazed at the wonderful animals people get rid of.
