Linguistics is the study of language. It's a scientific study because it analyzes "the language" systematically.
Language is a very complex phenomenon. We, humans, have the ability - the privilege- to speak. We can share our ideas, thoughts, feelings, and emotions – everything that goes in our minds through language. Although we are not always aware how important it is to have this privilege, language - the most distinctive feature of mankind- is not an ordinary phenomenon. It is not possible to solve the complexities of this overwhelming feature through simple curiosity and that is why there is a science that deals with language.

Because although most people manage to learn their native language, and many even a second or third one without taking recourse to linguistics, it is very useful to have a scientific view of the structures of languages and the mechanisms through which we are able to learn them. Science as a mechanism of finding common laws in languages and their acquisition is a better method than trial and error by the single learners theorizing away on their own.
I've learned 5 languages so far and found a study of comparative linguistics very helpful.

It's a mute point as to whether linguistics is a science. Historically, it has been a humanities subject along with English, theater, drama, literature, philosphy and history etc.
Over the past forty or fifty years, historians and linguists have been trying to make their fields more of a social science instead. This is unfortunate and makes them more technical, arcane and inaccessable to the average citizen .
However, much of it is probably aimed at gaining more grant money for the history and linguistics departments in the colleges and universities. Also, to maintaining job security in an era of often brutal budget cuts in money to educational institutions by state governments.
If I were a college professor teaching linguistics, I would probably have to go with the flow and accept this trend too.
