It's okay with me, but I know it's customary for people to say "hello", and "thank you". And as a customer I say this to the cashier too.

in shops here in the Philippines, the cashier are almost always polite. they have been trained to be so. we usually get a thank you.
i don't think it's OK when a cashier says nothing when I pay.

I think it's only courteous. I think it's just as bad if the cashier doesn't say thank you as if the customer doesn't. I used to work in a shop and said thank you to every single customer, even the rude ones. It p*sses them off if you're ultra friendly to them.

I know here in the Northeast it's pretty normal. They are throwing their change at you (usually while they are saying thankyouhaveaniceday) and you're trying to rush. When I lived in the Southwest the cashiers were very friendly. They would sit there and talk to everybody it was ANNOYING...standing in line waiting...while JimBob talked about his week...just different cultures...

They usually thank me, and I thank them also. If they don't, I thank them and am kind to them anyway. This USUALLY results in them being nice in return. Sometimes they are just a little standoffish because a bunch of customers have been jerks that day. I've been there. I'm not going to get offended over that, I'll try to break their run of bad luck. Now, if they are genuinely unkind and say rude things, THEN I'll be offended.

Absolutely not.I am a cashier and It pisses me off when cashiers don't thank customers.I am the trainer most times at my store, and I am serious about crap like that,That is one of my pet peeves.I pride myself on that ."a serious cashier",that can joke and have fun too.

I hate that. If they don't say Hello I always say Hello and make them greet me. I could use the self checkout that will one day replace cashiers. So the least he/she could do is Thank me for my patronage.

I live in Mississippi. Not only do they say Thank you, they usually add "hon" "darling" or "sweetie" at the end. It's a casual way of being nice. Men say that to women too- ring the register, complete the transaction and say "Thank you, honey". Nobody ever takes offense.
