White splotching on the nails in the absence of trauma is indicative of a period of nutrient depletion; specifically sources of keratin.

In matters of traumatic origin, leukonychia (or Leuconychia) is the medical term for white discoloration appearing on nails. It is derived from the Greek words Leuko white and Onyx nail. The most common cause is injury to the base of the nail (the matrix) where the nail is formed.

The sex glands become more active around the age of 12, when the monthly cycle starts in girls and semen-(sperms) starts multiplying and maturing in boys. It is like a raw clay brick and requires heat treatment. It is worth noting that semen is not stored anywhere in the body but it becomes syndrome of the body and can be seen as pure white half moon (white dots) in the nails.

Either lack of calcium or too much calcium, I forget which.

EDIT: Shutting your fingers in a door would probably cause cracked nails or bleeding (possibly also black or bruised nails).

It is damage from something striking your nails. So yes that something could be a door hitting them.
