US Military History: Name the Event on Sept. 18, 1947 and it's impact on the U.S. Military Services?

Hint: There are several answers to this question, but they are interrelated. Best answer goes to the most complete answer received first.

The National Security Act of 1947, meeting the need for a military reorganization to complement the U.S. superpower role, combined and replaced the former Department of the Navy and War Department with a single cabinet-level Department of Defense. The act also created the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the AIR FORCE.

The National Security Act of 1947 is signed by President Truman, which (among other things) made the United States Air Force an independent branch of the U.S. armed forces. Army Air Corps personnel and equipment were transferred to the new branch.

This gave rise to another historical event in 1949. Five-star General of the Army Henry A. Arnold (no longer on active duty) was transferred to the Air Force, thus becoming the only officer in American history to have held 5-star rank in two separate services.

Air Force Birthday

On Sept. 18, 1947, W. Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first secretary of the Air Force with the new Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal in attendance. After many years of planning, an independent air arm was formed, an equal to the Army and Navy. Based on achievements in air superiority, the Air Force became the "first line of defense" in a post-war world.

Shortly after taking office, Symington said: "In this day when a powerful counterattack is America's only real answer to aggression, there can be no question that we need the world's first Air Force. It is only through the global, flashing mobility of the Air Force that we can hold our counterattack poised ... we feel, with deep conviction, that the destiny of the United States rests on the continued development of our Air Force."

Several insignificant things occured on that day, forming of the CIA and the Air Force.

But the most important for the military was country singers Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, making it the venue's first country performance.

The reason this is so important, whereas rock & roll, folk, rap, hip hip and almost every other music form primarily have anti-war music, most country singers (except the dixie chicks) are strongly pro-war.
