I am not sure how to make the pencil stay upright while it moves.

Radio Shack sells small hobby motors for less then three dollars. You could also pull one out of an old toy. These are powered with a one or two batteries.

The more difficult part, if it is hard at all, is to fasten the pencil to the motor itself. You will have to fasten it somehow, and in the orientation you want it to rotate. My guess is you'll have to try several things to get it to work.

This sounds like some art or science project -- Good Luck!

You would get some more useful suggestions if you gave more information about what you are doing and why.

It is a little hard to know what the problem is. Attach the pencil to the motor shaft and turn it on. Perhaps you don't know how to power up the motor? It depends on what type of motor it is.

Is there some reason you can not just glue it to the motor shaft? Some 5 minute epoxy should work.
