The line which ran through Tiptree was the Kelvedon and Tollesbury Light Railway. Tiptree was late on the railway map, the line not opening until 1904, It was known locally as 'the Crab and Winkle line'. It was any early victim of closures, the end coming in 1952. I do believe the short stub to Tiptree remained open for freight from the famous jam factory. have a look at this page:- http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.anvil.clara.net/tolpier.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.anvil.clara.net/crab.htm&h=95&w=347&sz=5&hl=en&start=3&tbnid=TdXzc5Zb0OT7GM:&tbnh=33&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3DKelvedon%2B%2526%2BTollesbury%2BLight%2BRailway%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

Witham to Maldon line; single track as I recall. I travelled on it once to Wickham Bishops station. The line was closed following the publication of the Beeching Report.

There are a number of good histories on that era - try your local library.
