Neither.
I wouldn't respect that person, but revenge is unwise.
That leads them to get more revenge back, and the whole thing escalates.
If they're the sort of person who spreads lies, they'll get theirs.
Then you can laugh and enjoy it.
Revenge makes you look bad, too. Some people forget about the original wrong (of the other person), and only remember the wrong you commited in revenge.
If you take the high road, more people will respect YOU for it.
Just tell anyone who asks you the truth, or otherwise let the truth out.
Then let others judge who's the better person.

What's with the extremes here? There are more options than just seeking revenge or still respecting the person. Personally a lot would depend on what they said and who they said it to. And who believed it.
But generally I know my friends (the people who count to me) know me well enough not to believe rumors other people might try to spread.
I'd follow up by having my friends spread the truth whenever they heard the insults or rumors. Then I'd be very careful what information I ever gave to the person who spread the lies.

some people are bored and have a very low threshold of self-esteem, so they have to make up stories about othes to make themselves feel better. It gives them a temporary lift.
the "other people" who know you and know what your character is like, should realize the insults aren't true.
i suppose defending yourself is ok, but in my life, i IGNORE people like this and just don't pay attention. I know they have a low opinion of themselves, and why they seek attention in trying to hurt others.

Personally I'd try and stick up for myself
Even though I'd probably get pretty scared defending myself against somebody who's older than me, if I was that annoyed and troubled over it... I'd have to say/do something.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion including insults. I would leave that person alone, there is no reason to be friends with someone who doesn't respect you.

the offender is always wrong no matter what the situation is. no one should have the rights to insult others. just don't tell anything to that guy and let him learn the hard way.
