This is an answer that Jesus gave to the Disciples in Matt 6:9,concerning the proper way that "they" should pray.
The Disciples were the first members of the early church,
therefore they were aware that God was their father.
This becomes a personal relationship with God after
understanding John 6:44 and 45 which reads (No man can come to me, except the father which has sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in that last day.---It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the father, cometh unto me.)

Because the Lord's Prayer was an answer to a question the disciples had asked Jesus. They asked him how should they pray. They did belong to Him. When your church leader leads you to pray that way, it is because s/he is assuming you too know God as your Father. It's not the only way someone can address God. If you don't know Him yet as your Father you can just say "God."

This is saying that God is the church's father, not a person's physical father. For more information, look at the link below.

When we say "Father" we use a privileged title, demonstrating a privileged relationship. It was very unusual for Jews call God "Father" because it was considered too intimate.
When we say "in heaven" we remember God’s holiness and glory, who He is in relation to us.

In Heberw culture, when you enter into a covenant, you enter into a family. When you enter into God's covenant, you are a adopted son/daughter of The Father. Jesus is the Son of the Father by nature, but we are sons of the Father by adoption. This is why Christians call each other brother and sister.

Jesus is providing us with an image of spirituality. We are all children of God in the sense that our origin derives from him and he provides for us, just as a child is provided for by his father.
In the ancient world the image of the father was one of absolute power, strength, protection, and love. The word Jesus uses for father is "abba" which really means "papa" or "daddy." So, our image of father is made more intimate than just a symbol of power and protection. It is an image of love.
So, our love for God should be in that same sense of a child's love for his father - gratitude for what is given, trust in his promises and protection, and reverence for his love to us.

if there is a father, why do they deny a "mother"? - Pater noster
let's write a modern prayer for current times
"our beloved society, which art on same planet earth, hollowed be thine existence
thy awareness come, thy education become important, on this earth as it's done in other countries
give us this day our daily pure air, and forgive us of our poisons and pollutions, as we have began to die
lead us not into temptation to support package stores like WalMart which is the scurge of our society and end of our life as we know it by supporting child labor and low wages, no health care and profit for the few
deliver us from this evil of selfishness and bottom line thinking so we can once again enjoy life being kind to each other without the thought of bilking each other
for thine is the whole earth, without borders, for as long as we know it and have known it
