Because people on both sides of the argument fail to recognize that religious myths are instructive through metaphor, and that something can be true without being factual.
Apparently to get a thumbs up around here I have to make some snippy comment about the bible which completely takes some event therein out of context, interprets it literally, and makes no attempt to identify the message contained therein, like: there are too many kinds of animals to fit on the ark, durp!

Because of the manmade unbiblical tradition of sola scriptura, in which everyone supposedly finds the truth by personal interpretation of the Bible. The predictable result has been doctrinal chaos, with the founding of thousands of unauthorized manmade semi-Christian churches who can't agree with one another on a single point of doctrine. Conflicting beliefs mean false beliefs, since truth cannot conflict with truth. Is it any wonder then that some of the false beliefs formed through misinterpretation of the Bible conflict not only with genuine Christian truth but also with clearly demonstrated scientific facts?

Well, when a religion distinctly says "the earth is 6000 years old, fossils were planted by satan, and the earth is flat" it basically goes against science (and facts, knowledge, and truth).

because for 1500 years when religions had political power they did their best to crush science and philosophy. when humanism and democracy caused the churches to lose political power during the enlightenment, science and philosophy blossomed. how long would it take for a theocratic state to destroy science.
also the fact that science directly contradicts most holy texts if you take them literally would make them incompatible. history has shown that when a society is controlled by religious dogma the freedom of the individual, the freedom of speech and thought whither and die.

Because those people are too foolish to realize that science is the child of religion. Check out Hovind's science series, anyone who is interested in the evolution vs creation. It leaves no doubt in your mind after just one video.

An entire world flood covering all mountains is scientifically impossible as well as a boat big enough to have all those animals in it. Don't forget the story of 2 people populating the entire world in 6000yrs.

science and religion are the opposite
In science you are supposed to think rationaly whereas in religion you are told not to think for yourself and to believe what you've been told by those around you.
