I just moved into an apt and I plugged in my tv into the wall and got cable even though i didnt sign up for it. How does that happen? What should I do? I rarely watch tv but I like being able to when I want. Can I get in trouble if I dont report it even if I dont use it? Whats the worst that can happen?

I dont think its included in my bill, my landlord used to live in the apt before me and I know she had cable-i doubt illegally. How would the company find out? Do I get in trouble if I dont use it and not report it?

Is it more a matter of them shutting it off when I least expect it?

Where I live, the cable company leaves the basic channels (without the converter box) on, since they would need to physically come to the pole to disconnect it.

They typically want the basic channels there to "tease" you into buying their premium services. If they give you any sweat over it, just let them know you did not order it. They will disconnect it, and that will be that. until then....enjoy!

If it's already included in the rent, enjoy it.

If it's not included in the rent, and it's not supposed to be on, enjoy it anyway. The cable company may or may not turn it off when they discover it.

It is NOT theft of service since you did not actively hook it up to the trunk outside without permission. Plus, cable usually would rather have a paying customer than an upset tenant who will NEVER again use cable because they acted like hardasses. So the worst that will happen is one day you'll find yourself with just static. Maybe.

Enjoy the TV while it's there.

First are you sure it is not included in your bill?

If you are not supposed to have it you can call the cable company but I have to tell you many people would just enjoy it while it lasts because they may turn it off at any time.

If it really worries you then you should check with the company that rents you apartment to make sure it is not included then have the cable company turn it off. You could be charged for it and fines vary from location to location. But that is unlikely unless it is already an illegal connection to start with (one that the cable company did not install instead of one that they did install and forget to shut off when someone left the apartment).

Seems to me it's the cable companiy's responsibility to disconnect the apartment when it changes hands. But are you sure it isn't included in your rent? Ask your apartment manager.
