Do I have to avoid all furniture from a household that had a cat or can I just vacuum the sofa throughly to remove the cat dander? If I just sit near my daughter after she has held a cat, I have a reaction. I don't even have to see the cat.

Yes, don't buy any furniture from a previous pet owner, cat owner, even though you can clean it, it's not the same and the dender will linger, cling and remain there, you never have to see the cat in order to have a reaction!
I'd stay away from that, I'm suffering a lot from this right now and it's no fun, I'm staying with a friend who owns a cat and have the toghest time sleeping at night and doing anything!
