The Railways in Great Britain in the 20th century were re-organised twice.
In 1927 100's of smaller railway were grouped with the market leaders to form "the big four",who were: GWR(Great Western Railway),SR(Southern Railway),LMS(London Midland & Scottish Railway),and LNER(London North Eastern Railway).
Most of the Railways in East Anglia Came under LNER and were formed from the GN(Great Northern) & GE(Great Eastern) companies.
But not all.
Staying largely independant after grouping the M&GNR(Midland & Great Northern Railway) streched right across the north of east Anglia from a Junction near Melton Mowbray to Great Yarmouth and included a few branch lines.
The M&GNR stayed close to it's Midland roots using locomotives and equipment designed at Derby.
After nationalisation into British railways the M&GN suffered large scale decline, due mainly to the competition from road vehicles and the nature of it's very rural services.
Very little has survived of the M&GNR,most of it was closed wholesale during the late 1950's.
The North Norfolk railway at Sherringham runs on 5 miles of the old Cromer to Melton constable line.
