depending on how much your sheet rock your installing... If it's a large amount of work... sq ft works... if it's a small amount of work, your better off figuring you days and bid it or go time and material...
DRYWALL COST RANGE (this is approximate)
75¢ - $1.00 per square foot of wall area
This price includes materials which are between 25¢ - 35¢ per sq. ft. wall area.

The average cost for a 2500-3000 sq. ft. home is $5000 - $6000 of which approximately 30% is materials. If you choose to use drywall on your vaulted ceilings, be sure to add 30-40% to these costs.

I would charge by the job. Once you develop a technique for hanging drywall you become faster and more proficient. You learn little trick and techniques that save time and energy. If you don't have much experience, I would use the opportunity as a learning experience and when you are done you will have a better idea about how much to charge in the future. It's hard work, but you can do a lot of things to simplify it and make it go faster. If it's a small job, if I were you I'd just charge the same as the material cost. If it's a large job you might want to consider not bidding on it. I would also plan on hiring someone to help you. Especially if you are doing a ceiling. I've done this work alone before and it is a lot more difficult and would have been worth a few bucks more to hire a stronger young person to help. Use screws; easier and stronger. Use the largest sheets you can.

If you are private contractor, you should charge materials plus labor.Labor usually is somewhere between 35.00 and 75.00 depending on the amount of work and number of men. It also depneds on where youare installing, walls, ceiling. How much labor intailed (do you have to lug up or down stairs?) Are you going to tape, mud, sand, and paint the walls when done? Do you know this person and want to do a favor? Also you should think about removal fees for all waste. If you have to remove the waste and hall to a dump, you will usually pay another 25.00 per truckload.
