I adopted 2 lovebirds that had been together their entire lives, around 8 years. 1 of them died yesterday, I did not notice any symptoms, and the other one appears to be fine. Should I get the survivor another cage mate or will he be O.K. alone, and possibly allow me to hand train him. What would be healthier for him?

It's likely the bird will be sad over the loss of its buddy but it can be fine without another bird. This would be a good time for you to work with the bird and have him become tamer. Lovebirds contrary to popular belief, do not need to be kept in pairs. If you have the time and want to, you can make the remaining bird into a lovely little friend for yourself, it will just take alot of work and patience. If you don't think you have the time or patience though, you could eventually get another bird. (Though, If the one bird dropped at only 8 years old with no signs, I would bring the other bird to a vet to have him checked immediately, especially before you bring home another bird) If you do however, there is no guarantee that your bird will like or accept the new bird, so be prepared to possibly have to keep up 2 separate cages.

A new cage not mate health reasons a ll love birds mate for life even if they were both males or both females it's not mate like mateing(sex) they pair after a while and if they loose a mate it's a good chance it will live on.you just need to spend more time with it like talking to it special food or fruit just let know some one cares may sound dumb but true
