Is it true that recruits are now issued the black berets in BASIC TRAINING!?. Are they wearing unit patches too? Do they wear name tags also? WOW things have changed since I went in 2001.

When I was running basic training in 2004, they were issued them, but they did not wear them until graduation. They were issued them so they could start forming them. Putting on the beret was part of the graduation ceremony.

They can't wear them until they graduate, in pulblic (berets).. No they have no unit patches because they haven't gotten to a unit yet, however, a drill sgt can give a patch which can be worn by a recruit during training in OSUT.. But it has to be his old patches. It is awarded to a new regruit for his dedication in and to his training.. My son recieved his Drill Sgt's airborne patches and wings (he couldn't wear the wings, except in his breast pocket where the DS placed them) during his because he showed himself to be Squard away.. My son was given these because he was going to airborne training right after he graduated from OSUT.. Hope this answers your questions..
