The 383 was the base motor for the road runner.A 383 is a b block that means the block height is 3/4's of an inch shorter than the rb block motors.B motors are 383 and 400 and the earlier 361.Rb motors are 413 426 max wedge and hemi and 440.CI stands for cubic inches and all 383 equiped road runners were factory 4 barrel engines yours is rated 335 hp from the factory and if you look at the downslope on the block below the distributor you should see the size of the engine and an hp stamp.

The way you word it is somewhat confusing - if you own this car, doesn't it go without saying it's a 383-4?

However, I am gonna guess that this is what your mechanic is saying:

Indeed, the 383 was the base motor for the RR in 1969, but not all 383s were created equal. On paper, all of the RR engines were rated at 335hp, but some RRs received the 330hp engine that was available on Belvederes and Satellites. When did this occur? If you ordered your RR with AC, it received the 330hp engine. This was never indicated in advertising or anything like that, but that's what Ma Mopar did.

Interestingly enough, if you got a Belvedere or Satellite with the 4-speed, you automatically received the 335hp RR engine! But this was only true for cars without AC. Can you imagine a 383 Belvedere post coupe with this engine? It's more of a Q-ship than the RR!

So I'm guessing that your mechanic is saying you have the 383 4bbl. engine rather than the "proper" Road Runner 383 that you'd expect in a Road Runner. This is a fact that's not well-known, but it's documented.

(Please keep in mind that not all 383s are equal from another perspective - there was a 383 "RB" engine but we're talking about the "B" engines.)

Hi, well, the 383, is the size of the motor, and the 4BBL, is the carburetor setup on it. Basically, a 4 barrel carb, with an intake to match the carb. Hope this helps. :)

I have owned several roadrunners and only encountered the problem you discribe once. It was in a 1972 340 4 speed I had in 1985. Isearched out all the normal items (clutch, balancer, etc.), it turned out to be a slightly bent fan blade that was barely noticable until removed to look at.

383 cubic inch displacement with a four barrel carb. Look inside the carb and you should see four holes. The two in back will be bigger than the two in front. If, there are only two holes then it a two barrel carb. I had a 1970 Roadrunner years ago, they will move on down the road. "Beep, Beep"!
