South Africa's seasons are the opposite of the US so maybe its the off season for CA and FL oranges.

Tsetse fly is an insignificant pest in South Africa since at least the 1960's if not earlier and is in any case a carrier of an animal disease and is totally irrelevant for oranges.

As far as diseases that do affect oranges are concerned, there are inspection procedures at every step of the process from the farm in SA to the importer in the US.

As to how they got to the shop in Chicago, it probably went something like this:

Packed into a refrigerated container on the farm in SA. Trucked to the harbour (most likely Cape Town) where it was loaded onto a ship. Ship sails to the US (I have no idea which harbour is most likely) From there it was probably trucked and/or railed and/or put on another ship to Chicago and then to the shop where you bought it.

Were you happy with the quality?

Greetings from South Africa.

southern California suffered a bad freeze earlier this year taking out most of the orange crops. maybe there is a shortage and the suppliers are looking elsewhere to fill the orders.
