It is very rare for a CRT filament to go open ( burn out ) .During my 45 year career repairing TV s in three countries I only came across three or four at most !! A rough estimate of TVs that I repaired in that time would be around 30,000 !!
Cheers Pete

Yes, the filament can burn out, but only after a VERY long time. I still have a Mitsubishi CRT set that has been used regularly for 23 years and it still looks as good as ever.

A new DLP TV, however, has a lamp that may require replacing in considerably less time than that, depending on how much it's used. But they're much cheaper to replace.
