My mother weighs around 210 lbs. She carries herself very well and doesn't look bad, believe it or not.
Okay so anyway, she has to have surgery but the dr. put her on a liquid diet for 8 weeks. I'm worried about this. Anyway, the calories barely total 800 per day.
At her weight how much is she going to lose on a liquid diet for two months? I read somewhere that she will probably lose between 35-50 lbs, is this true? I mean isn't this DANGEROUS?

Thanks!

My dad has had to do this several times. He has Crohn's Disease, and actually recently was not able to eat for 6 weeks. They had him only on nutritional supplements. And for several weeks after that, he was on a liquied diet only.

The liquid diets they put you on actually contain all of the nutrients that you need to live. She will lose some weight. In all respect, it's actually good that your mom is somewhat overweight. That way it won't affect her that much. My dad only weighed 114 pounds when they put him on this diet. (He is very sick)

Don't worry. The doctors know what they are doing, and if any problems do occur, then they can change something to make it work.

If the doctor put her on a liquid diet for surgery, chances are, it's necessary. They would not do something like that if it was life-threatening or dangerous. Modern liquid diets contain enough vitamins, fats, and minerals to survive. There can be some side effects such as stomach cramps and anemia, but it's not likely. I think as long as she follows the doctors directions and lets them know how she is doing, everything will be fine. Good luck!

As long as the Dr doesn't seem to think it's dangerous. Regular check ups and visits w/ the Dr are in order here. Don't take anyones advice here. Stick with the plans the Dr has made. There's a good reason I'm sure.

If only calories are limited, and the diet is controlled by a nutritionist, it is safe. She can drink blended vegetable soup and take multivitamins in syrup for example.
