Hey Mary! When we get kittens at the shelter that young with fleas, we use warm water and diluted Dawn dish detergent and dip them long enough to drown the fleas. Thoroughly dry the kittens (hair dryer on low setting) and then use a flea comb to remove all the insect bodies and dirt. You'll probably have to do Mom, or she'll give them right back to the babies. If Mom won't submit to a bath, just use the flea comb on her. Kittens should be at least 8 weeks before a mild flea product can be used on them. Have you lined up a spay for Mom? Google 'low-cost spay/neuter' and your zip code if your pal needs $$$ help with spay and shots.

My friend went through exactly the same thing a few months ago. We have one of the kittens now. She did what the others said to do, a warm bath (kitchen sink works well) with a bit of mild detergent. Not too much... literally a drop per kitty. Give mom an application of advantage, and if possible, while they're out of the garage, spray the floor of the garage with a good bug spray from a bug control store. Don't let the cats back in the garage until the spray has dried- usually that makes the spray inert and less toxic. When my friend did this, mom moved the kittens and my friend panicked. She found everybody and took them to the basement (a relatively comfortable space with light and places to hide and play) offered them food, water, cat boxes, toys, etc. until everyone could be medicated and tested by the vet. Most people can't or won't go that far for a stray, and that's ok. It's just tough to take care of a litter and mom who's free to come and go because after so much handling and shampooing, she is likely to move or abandon the kittens. The flea thing is a problem for almost all outdoor untreated animals and if it gets out of control, it can kill the weaker kittens by making them too anemic (the fleas literally suck the life out of them). Containing the litter with mom is the best way to guarantee a happy ending until they're able to be adopted.

@schrodinger_hated_cats: Flea airborne dirt and airborne dirt and dust is the cat's blood digested with the aid of the fleas. Vet suggestion: Wash the kittens with daybreak dish cleansing soap (they used it on animals in the BP oil spill, it is totally secure, do not subject) each and every ten days 4 circumstances an afternoon which kills the grownup fleas and the eggs hatch each and every ten days. while the kittens are moist you should use a flea comb and them placed the extra fleas in water to drown. you additionally can use tweezers. solid success! Edit: @schrodinger_hated_cats: Whoops. Sorry. *blush*

At that age, it is best to avoid flea meds and shampoos until they are about 6 weeks of age (then use something like advantage that is safer than the storebought flea meds). At this age you just need to rinse them with warm water and use dawn dish soap to get the fleas off. This wont keep the eggs from hatching, but it will give them relief until they are old enough to be treated. Youll want to do this every 4-7 days depending on the severity of the infestation. Be sure to dry them quickly so they wont get chilled.

Don't use ANYTHING from a store, including on adult cats. These products are not safe, which is why you won't find anything in stores that is safe for use on kittens.
Don't bath in detergent either. There's no point washing the things off, they'll only become reinfested - dish soap is not a repellant.
Get Frontline spray from a vets. It's safe for use on kittens from 2 DAYS of age.
