Someone wishes to sell me a motorcycle, but he does not have a title for it? What will happen? How will it affect me?

Simple. You do NOT buy the bike! No title = NO SALE!

If you go brain-dead and buy it you will NOT be able to register or title it in your name. This means that you will not be able to use it on any public road or access way.

In the worst case scenario you may be arrested for receiving stolen property. Most vehicles sold without a title are actually stolen. Only an idiot would buy a vehicle without a clear title. I hope you're NOT an idiot!

NEVER buy any kind of vehicle without seeing a TITLE with the seller's name on it.

If the seller claims to have "misplaced" the title, MAKE him go through the process of getting a duplicate. It's up to YOU to make sure you're not buying stolen property.

You won't be able to legally register the motorcycle in your name and get tags for it without a title, so you'll be riding around on an UNregistered, likely stolen motorcycle. If you're stopped, the motorcycle will be confiscated and YOU will get at least one ticket for operating an unregistered motorcycle.

You could be charged with receiving stolen goods, and found guilty.
If they are the legal owner there are methods in many places that can provide the documentation required.

There are some states that do not require a title.
But they do require current registration, bill of sale or a manufacturers certificate of origin
