I know this sounds incredibly ignorant, but I really don't know what to do. Some of the programs I had downloaded and have no CDs for. Do I burn a copy of the program in its setup form with the installers and parts in rar (compressed) form or do I burn a copy of the programs after I have installed them? Which form is software in on its original CD?

For those programs you downloaded without a CD, create a backup up the original zipped file (rar) or installation "exe" file that you stored on your hard drive. Also, be sure to save the serial numbers that you used to activate them to begin with. (I keep mine written on a piece of paper and put them inside each CD case along with the backed up installation programs.)

For the ones that install from a CD, the best thing is to just hang onto the original installation CD. Once again, make sure you have the registration number safe and secure.

By the way, you are NOT dumb. You're really smart for backing these things up to begin with!

Good luck.

When you download a program it is wise to burn a copy of the installation files after you have downloaded them. Once you have these files burned to a cd or other external medium, you can install from that medium, just as if it were a purchased cd.
