Don't use forums. Use published data. Get several referencesand compare them. Sometimes there is a misprint and you don't want to blow you or your gun apart.

Google 8mm and follow the links; I will have to do this myself sooner or later. I collect 8mm Mausers and am in process of buying a new introcuction from Mauser, a 98 standard. They have started production of the 98 in sportorized form again, a standard and a magnum model. I really like the .323 caliber; it moves a 196 slug at the speed of a smaller 7.62 (30 cal) slug. Read up on the difference between the .318 and the .323 so you fully understand it. I wasn't even aware there was a difference until I digested several pages of information. The original commission rifle was in .318 cal and the 98 was in .323 cal. That is why american commercial 8mm ammo is loaded to 30/30 specs almost; so it can be fired in the oldest rifles; nice for the oldest rifles; but it leaves all the newer stuff underpowered. I bought some S & B that is loaded to european specs and it is very good stuff; the .323 loading is called 8x57JS (the JS is because german typeset made the i look like a j). This is to differentiate between the original 8x57 of .318 and the .323 stuff.

The best loadintg data site I have found on line is:

http://www.loaddata.com

Go to the address, run a search for 8mm Mauser, and they will give you all the info you could use.

Best of all, it's FREE!

There are 2 that you should check out, the first one is WARIFLES. com, the next is Fredsm14stocks, when you get on Freds website click onto his links and look for RWVA and click onto that one.
There is a whole lot of good info on these two sites.
