If you were alive 3000 years ago, you'd probably be religious just like everyone else at the time. Lets say you lived in Greece, and your whole family believed with all of there hearts that there religion was true and prayed very hard everyday and even thought that there prayers were working. Would you be an atheist back then and tell all of these people that there religion is just a fairy tale and that they were crazy to think that praying to zeus actually makes a difference in there life?

A very large proportion of the people did what they do today. Attend to religion once a week and then do what ever they want. If you were an atheist you would not only be against the religion, you would be against the state. So you would just keep your mouth closed.

No I wouldnt tell them it was all a delusion. I'd probably be put to death for blaspheming all those gods like Zeus or Horus or Moloch or whatever!

I think civilisation has come far enough that we can now speak out and say 'Let's leave this superstitious BS behind and grow up as a species'

I see your point. We're supposed to say that we'd go with the mainstream and worship Zeus or whoever it was fashionable to worship back in those days. But you see, here's a little catch - today it's fashionable to worship Jesus and yet I don't do it.

So my answer would be - knowing my spirit and its nature I would probably end up dead for speaking out :P

And yeah, atheism and variety of religions was present back then too, so ...

Cheers!

There was atheism back then too. and no christians to push their religion on to you. People respected each other for whatever their belief was and it was no big deal. When the Christians came, the good relation between religions and beliefs was destroyed.

Have a look at Jennifer Hecht's "Doubt," and you might be surprised to see the change in how people regarded religion 3,000 years ago.

Of course, this would involve reading, which is not popular these days, but it is well worth the effort.

I'm a historian as well, and one who knows the difference between "there" and "their."

Religion wasn't forced down one's throat then. Not like today.

Not sure if Greece was around then, it might have been. Israel was just starting it's development.
