I am an EFL teacher (but I am not a native English speaker) and one of my students keeps using the expression "according to me" meaning "in my opinion"...I have been telling her it's wrong but she insists some previous teachers have told her it's a formal way of saying "in my opinion"...in all my years as an English teacher/student I have never heard of such a thing...who is right? natives only please

I mean...would you use it in a formal context, as in writing an essay or an oral examination to assess your level of English?

"According to me ..." is perfectly acceptable in either context. Let's explain in simpler terms.

If you were writing an essay, you could begin a sentence with "According to President Bush ...", or "According to National Geographic"; in the same context you could write "According to me". The only way it would be incorrect is if it were written (or verbalized as) "According to myself".

I'd say it's ok in an informal setting, especially in response to a challenge, but NOT in an essay. "According to my research" would be fine.
