It would be easier to read if you used sentences instead of all one paragraph that runs on and on.

Kittens with rabies would die in a few days. A cat with rabies can't drink or swallow well so they die in 14 days. They act sick the whole time too because they are very sick. A frightened cat will hiss, especially one in a new environment.

Whether the father had rabies or not won't transmit to kittens in the mother. If the mother is not sick, she isn't infected (and there are very few cases of rabies in any part of the states, remember that all cases have to be reported so there are statistics). If the cat was not a true feral (runs when around people, can't be caught, is not trusting humans) they're more apt to have FIV than rabies. But chances are even that is a pretty low occurrance.

It sounds more like your new cat is very afraid of the new environment and is just warning everyone off to stay back and let her have some room to adjust to all the newness, especially now that she's got more kittens to worry about. This is very high stress on a cat.

I wouldn't think rabies could be transmitted from the mom to the babies, but you never know. Don't forget that kitten play, and it's usually play fights....they also bite their moms. If you're worried I'd definitely go to the vet.

At 3 wks, their eyes have opened and their motor skills are developing. Cats are hunters, so they are starting to learn how to catch their dinner, even though mom and you are providing it. Sounds like you need to interact with them more because of the hissing - they do that when scared. Start playing with them and holding them lovingly so that they will be more sociable. You may have stayed away from them because they were small and you did not want to interfere with mom and her babies but the sooner they are used to loving, holding and playing the better pets they will make to find homes for. Please get mom spayed as soon as possible so you do not have to go thru this again. Best of luck and I hope you find good homes for the babies.
