Should I go ahead and buy the Canon G9 if I can't afford a camera over $600 or is there a DSLR that would be 'better' in that price range? OR, is there a P&S cheaper than the G9 and just as good? Most 'professional' reviews are written by people who tested the camera just a couple of times & the reviews on Amazon seem to be rants one way or the other.

It depends on how you intend on using your camera, I have both a digital and a DSLR. The DSLR allows you to do more things, like use different lenses and filters where as a digital does not.

The Quality of the pictures are about the same if you only use the auto focus feature and don't change lenses or use the manual settings.

I just looked up the Canon G9 specs and it looks like it's probably a good camera, I have the Canon XT Rebel and it's amazing and in the same price range.

Either way, it all depends on your level of use which one is better for you.

The Canon G9 looks like a very good camera. But, as I've said before, once you open the box, that's all you have. With a DSLR (I'd recommend a Nikon D400 or Canon XT) you have a starting point. Yes, it's fully automatic and has a very versatile kit zoom lens (usually 18-55mm or so), but it can grow with your skills and interests. You can add wide angles, telephotos, specialized flashes, etc. without end.

It's like buying a condo or a house for the same price. If you want to expand in the future, the house (DSLR) is the way to go.

The Pentax K100D is going for around $445 with a standard zoom lens. You could add some accessories and keep it under $600 and be in good shape, plus you'd have a much more flexible camera.
