With all the short form and improper language usage in SMS, it is kind of deterrent to language.
For example:
We will be meeting at the Train Station 9am tomorrow.
One can sms it as:
We wil b meetg a e train statn 9am tmr.
It took me a while to read and understand my friends' sms. Once they keep typing it the same way, ask them to spell it out might be a problem for them.

Everything has its pros and cons. But a deterrent to language skills? Are you sure?
As I understand it, learning ANY second language is a good thing. It boosts language skills and makes it easier to learn other languages later on. Its the process of learning it that is important so it doesnt matter if its a "real" language or not.
In this case, it also boosts creativity in coming up with the shortened text, and logic skills in figuring out new ones that you see.
And finally, SMS text is international. Get on a MMORPG (multiplayer game) late at night and see how many Korean or Japanese players there are who can have a whole conversation with you in short text but dont know any english.

Translation: Who says it's a deterrent? Personally I think of it as another language, particularly suited for use over the mobile phone network. Long may it live!

i think when used properly it can aid in getting the whole message across....but if used too often it does effect the users writing skills.....
